South Africa has one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the world. And most conversations about it stop at the economy.

But here's what doesn't get said:

β€’ Being unemployed, or feeling stuck, doesn't just affect your bank account. It affects your mind.

β€’ Research published this year in the South African Journal of Psychiatry found that unemployed young people experience stress, anxiety, feelings of worthlessness, and deep social isolation.

β€’ One in three young people entering employment programmes reported thoughts of self-harm.

β€’ This is not a motivation problem. This is a mental health crisis hiding in plain sight.

If you're in that space right now, feeling invisible, behind, or like you're failing at life, please know: what you're feeling has a name, and it can get better with the right support.
