Support Groups

Heal SA’s mental health support groups are made up of group of people who come together to share their experiences of mental health challenges and to provide each other with support. Support groups can be a valuable resource for people who are struggling with mental health problems, as they can provide a sense of community, understanding, and hope.

Our mental health support groups can be either face-to-face or online. Face-to-face groups typically meet regularly, such as once a week or once a month. Online groups can be asynchronous, meaning that participants can post messages and reply to each other at any time, or they can be synchronous, meaning that participants meet at a specific time and discuss topics together in real time.

We offer different types of mental health support groups, each with its own focus. Some groups are specific to a particular mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety. Others are more general and focus on providing support for people with a variety of mental health challenges. There are also groups for family members and friends of people with mental health problems.

Mental health support groups can offer a variety of benefits, including:

  • Reduced isolation: People with mental health problems often feel isolated and alone. Support groups can provide a safe space where they can connect with others who understand what they are going through.
  • Increased coping skills: Support groups can teach people coping skills to help them manage their mental health challenges.
  • Improved self-esteem: Support groups can help people to feel more confident and capable.
  • Hope: Support groups can provide hope and inspiration to people who are struggling with mental health problems.

If you are considering joining a mental health support group, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

  • Be prepared to share: Support groups are based on the idea of mutual sharing. Be prepared to share your experiences and to listen to the experiences of others.
  • Be patient: It may take some time to find a support group that you feel comfortable with. Don’t give up if you don’t find the right group right away.

If you are struggling with a mental health problem, please know that you are not alone.
